UNH Dividend History

UnitedHealth's dividend more than doubled in six calendar years. Every UNH payment since 1990, and why the 2.40% yield is the least interesting number on this page.

UNH Dividend — Quick Facts
  • The latest check: $2.32 per share. UnitedHealth's board authorised it on August 12, 2026, payable September 22, 2026 to holders of record as of September 14, 2026 — the 87th dividend in our record, which begins on August 27, 1990.
  • The June 2026 raise: the board lifted the annual rate to $9.28 per share from the $8.84 paid since June 2025, a 5.0% increase. That $9.28 is the forward rate, not what the last year actually delivered.
  • Trailing twelve months: $9.06 per share — two quarters at $2.21 and two at $2.32 — against $8.62 the year before, a year-over-year gain of 5.1%. At the September 21, 2026 close of $377.56 that is a 2.40% trailing yield, or about $20.00 a month per $10,000 invested, arriving quarterly.
  • Doubled in six years: the per-share dividend went from $4.140 in 2019 to $8.730 in 2025, a rise of 110.9%. The 2026 total on this page is still incomplete — the December payment has not gone ex yet.
  • The raise lands in June: $2.10 a quarter became $2.21 with the June 2025 payment, and $2.21 became $2.32 with the June 2026 one. That is a pattern in the record, not a commitment by the company.

A six-year doubling is history, not a schedule. Dividend increases are board decisions made one at a time, and the June cadence visible above is an observation about two recent years rather than a promise about the next one — unless the board acts again, the rate stays at $9.28. The trailing yield of 2.40% and the forward rate of $9.28 are different measurements of different periods; this page keeps them apart on purpose.

Every Dividend Payment, Over Time

Each point below is one real UNH dividend, from the first in our record in August 1990 through the $2.32 paid on September 22, 2026. The step pattern is the thing to look for: long flat stretches of four identical quarterly checks, broken by a raise each June.

Growth Rate Beats Starting Yield

A screener sorting by yield puts UNH near the bottom of the dividend universe. At 2.40% trailing, $10,000 produces about $20.00 a month, which is a fraction of what the option-income funds on this site advertise. Sorting that way hides what the record actually shows: $4.140 per share in 2019 became $8.730 in 2025. The payout more than doubled in six calendar years, and then rose again in June 2026.

That distinction matters because the two kinds of funds are doing different things. A payout that grows 5% a year compounds against your original cost, so the yield on what you actually paid climbs every year even while the quoted yield stays near 2%. A high-distribution fund hands you more cash today and, in several cases we track, has been shrinking the capital behind the check to do it. Neither is automatically better. But comparing them on today's yield alone compares the one number where the grower always loses.

When Is UNH's Next Ex-Dividend Date?

UNH pays quarterly, and the annual raise has landed with the June payment in each of the last two years. The exact date of each payout is announced by the fund only shortly beforehand, so no site can promise the next date — but the live schedule box above shows the most recent ex-dividend date and the expected window for the next one, computed from UNH's actual payment rhythm. Remember: you must own shares before the ex-dividend date to receive that payout.

Reading the Steps Instead of the Line

A dividend chart for a company like UnitedHealth looks like a staircase, not a slope. Four identical quarterly checks, then a step up, then four more. In the last stretch that meant $2.10 paid four times through March 2025, $2.21 from June 2025 through March 2026, and $2.32 from June 2026. The flat stretches are not stagnation and the steps are not volatility — together they are what a growing dividend actually looks like at quarterly resolution.

Trailing Versus Forward, and Why Both Appear Here

Two numbers describe UNH's dividend right now and they do not agree. The trailing twelve months paid $9.06 per share, because two of those four quarters predate the June raise. The forward annual rate, set by the board in June 2026, is $9.28. Sites that quote whichever is larger without saying which they used are the reason this page labels both. The trailing figure is what the last year delivered; the forward figure is what four more quarters at the current rate would deliver if nothing changes.

What to Watch From Here

Whether the December 2026 payment holds at $2.32, which would confirm the June-raise pattern for a third year. Whether the growth rate stays near 5% or compresses. And how a grower stacks up against the high-payout funds most of this site tracks — the comparison tool overlays any two payment records, and the dividend calculator prices your own amount in UNH against anything else we cover.
